RDC feature in Scottish Pharmacist – September 2019

The tranquil countryside village of Winchburgh in West Lothian is currently undergoing a revitalisation plan to develop the village into a town over the next 15 years.  Attracting young and old alike, the village is witnessing major developments in housing and as well as 3,450 homes and school buildings, the plans include improved transport links, a marina, a 75-acre park and 35 acres of employment land.

Having had a presence in the village for over 15 years, Right Medicine Group took the decision to capitalise on the future plans by relocating to the newly developed shopping centre in the heart of the village.  The Group also used the opportunity to launch the next generation Pharmaself24 at the Winchburgh pharmacy, the first for Right Medicine Group in Scotland.

Richard Stephenson, Chief Operating Officer with Right Medicine Group, commented:

“Given that we wanted to install a Pharmaself24, it was crucial that we partnered with the pharmacy design and fit-out consultants who had the experience and the knowledge to deliver the optimum solution.  Retail Design Consultants also took care of the headache of obtaining planning permission for the signage and the robot and also the building warrant for the internal work.

Terry Cuthill of Retail Design Consultants, said:

“Our USP is our willingness and commitment to look with very critical eyes at the design and fit-out but to also be very astute to the commercial needs of our clients.  Collaboration is key to a successful project.  Before a pen was put to paper, we worked closely with our client to work out what they needed from the unit in terms of consultation rooms, how the dispensary would work, how to achieve an extended retail space and how to also incorporate the Pharmaself24 without losing space to other necessary requirements of the pharmacy.

“We also worked closely with local building control to ensure that the shop met the highest standards of compliance to environmental regulations.”

Retail Design Consultants provided a full turnkey solution to the Winchburgh pharmacy.  Designed in Right Medicine Group’s livery of grey, white and green, an open plan dispensary with central checking bench and floor to ceiling open-plan shelving surrounds the dispensary and also features a script collection storage drawer system.

Retail Design Consultants work included:

Obtaining all necessary planning permissions and building warrants

Creation of a DDA compliant retail counter with a semi-private advice area which also provides a secure entrance to the dispensary.

Bespoke retail units

The creation of two new Consultation Rooms

The creation of a new shopfront, incorporating the Pharmaself24

New signage

New lowered ceiling

Energy efficient LED lighting and heating panels

All plumbing works

All electrical works

Richard Stephenson, concluded:

“The end-result is an open-plan pharmacy which is very customer facing.  It has a feeling of space with no barriers to customer engagement.  Partnering with Retail Design Consultants on this project exceeded our expectations.  We were really impressed with their can-do attitude and their willingness to go above and beyond to deliver a next-generation pharmacy which will meet the rapidly expanding needs of the local community.”
