Pharmacy Design and Fit Out for M & D Green, Bishopbriggs

Following the acquisition of the retail unit next door, the M & D Green Group of Dispensing Chemists has created one of its largest pharmacies in Kirkintilloch High Street in the village centre of Bishopbriggs.

Recent years have seen an increasing demand for services from the popular community pharmacy and with that in mind, owner Martin Green took the opportunity to expand when the neighbouring former bookmakers came on the market.

Area Manager, Louise Carson, commented:

“Although the existing unit had served us well, demand for our services and the number of scripts we are now doing meant that we were really at capacity with no room to grow.  When the unit next door became available, it offered the perfect opportunity to expand and create an environment that works for us now and is big enough to allow us to grow further and develop our range of services.

“We have worked with Terry Cuthill of Retail Design Consultants on many of our pharmacies over the years.  They have an innate understanding of what our service offering is and how to physically interpret our brand.  They know we need to have a pharmacy that is in line with our brand image, but they also understand and deliver the really important aspects of optimising the design to make it function as a busy dispensing pharmacy.

“Pharmacy fit-out is a really specialised area of design and having worked with the team at Retail Design Consultants over the years, we knew we could trust them to deliver.  Collaboration with the team is always excellent and every time we work with Retail Design Consultants, they bring something extra to the table which we maybe hadn’t considered, for example, the roller shutters at the front come down behind the window display units and are illuminated at night.  Just this simple design feature means that we have 24-hour visibility to all passing traffic of our pharmacy and retail offering.

“The fit-out took place in November 2020 and we have had incredibly positive feedback, both from customers and staff.  Because it is all open plan, it is a lovely environment to work and shop in.  Also, the addition of the Pharmaself24 means that people have the option to collect their prescription without coming into the shop and this leaves increased space for us to allow more customers in the pharmacy during these socially distanced times.  We do about 7,000 scripts per month and it is growing all the time, so we are in a very comfortable position to keep up with demand.

“We also expect a big uplift in people requesting the flu vaccine later this year and these larger premises gives us the space and capacity to provide this service to all who need it.”

Terry Cuthill of Retail Design Consultants said:

“I fitted out the original pharmacy a number of years ago so had an in-depth understanding of the structural design of the pharmacy. Acquiring the next-door unit has allowed for a much larger dispensary and in total, has made the pharmacy 2.5 times the size it was originally.

“The project didn’t come without its challenges.  Because the newly acquired unit was on a different level, we had to knock the dividing wall together and then level off the flooring on both sides.  Our remit included obtaining planning permission for the new signage/Pharmaself24 and obtaining a building warrant for all the construction work which included the creation of a fire escape at the back of the building to service these much larger premises.   The dispensary is now about 4 times the size of the original dispensary and we increased the retail space by about 100%.”

Branded in the recognisable lime green, Avola grey and white M & D Green colour scheme, Retail Design Consultants work included:

  • Obtaining planning permission for signage and Pharmaself24
  • Obtaining a building warrant for all the construction work
  • The creation of a back door fire-escape staircase

Commenting on his partnership with RDC, owner Martin Green, said:

“What has always really impressed me about RDC is their transparency. Not only in delivery but also in their ability to work to an agreed financial structure and that is really appealing to me when planning my own budgets.

“What also appeals to me is the one point of contact to sort out any issues which may arise during the lifetime of a project and their after-sales service.

“They are excellent problem solvers, and they have a true insight into the M & D brand, working collaboratively with us over the years as the brand has evolved. At the beginning of every project, we will work together to prepare a vision of what the end-result should look like and after that point, I can put my full trust in RDC to deliver.

“This is undoubtedly one of my main motivators for using RDC on a repeat basis.”
